Which Sleeping Bag to Choose

The sleeping bag is an integral part of the trip of backpacking, an essential element of his equipment. So choosing the right one is important for several factors, getting it wrong can lead to suffer the heat at high summer temperatures or (even worse) the cold in winter. Given that there is a sleeping bag that works for all conditions, the choice is very wide.

Which Sleeping Bag to Choose

First step is to read well on the climatic conditions of the places we visit. Once established on average temperatures, consider purchasing carefully reading the label stated on the sleeping bag.
The European standard EN 13537 of 2005 has forced all manufacturers to bring back on the lot a label providing the temperature thresholds. The latter are the result of lab tests with thermal manikin. Are excluded from this statement of military sleeping bags, Arctic ones (under -25°) and those for children, who have a different temperature from the adult.
Buy a sleeping bag only if has the label and not just the drawing!
As you read this label?

The four temperature results are:

  • Tmax or upper bound that is the temperature at which a standard man can sleep without excessive perspiration. It is established with hood and zippers open;
    • Tcomfort is the temperature at which a standard woman can sleep comfortably in a relaxed position;
    • Tlimit function is the temperature at which a man can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking.
    • Textreme is the lowest limit at which a woman can remain for six hours without risk of hypothermia (but with Frost in the lower limbs).

All that being said it is important to clarify some aspects, because these data represent standard temperatures that can, in some cases, vary depending on the situation and reality of the subject.

In particular you should be aware that:
1. these data are the result of tests done on thermal manikins that replicate a human being’s physical condition in good health;
2. is not considered the age or the subject’s metabolism, thermal curtain effect is not taken into account, nor clothes that a person might wear, nor, conversely, the type of mattress used to isolate ourselves from the ground;
3. it is important to say that wearing warm socks, a good batteries and other thermal clothing, greatly increases the heat capacity of the bag and reduces the transmission of perspiration.

Let us, then, to the choice of material and its shape.

Down or synthetic?
The feather is lighter, more Packable and sometimes also costs less than the synthetic, but the synthetic dries much faster, not only external, but also moisture from the humidity that we produce ourselves, within the lot, sweating. In addition, weight for weight, the synthetic provides increased warmth and, if wet, still has 70% of its insulating properties, where the feather loses it almost completely. Important is also the economic aspect, in fact a lot made with low-quality goose down is cheaper than a lot of quality synthetic materials such as Primaloft, Microloft and Hollowfibre. Different speech if the goose are valuable.

Rectangular or a mummy?
The Mummy pull better in the body, reducing the air space to be heated, remember that we are the ones who put up the bag and not the other way around. A good mummy is always equipped with closing over the shoulders and lockable Cap almost completely, then much better suited to deal with cold temperatures. If we visit places with cold weather, the choice in this case, falls doubtless the shape to Mummy.
Speech opposite goes for hot countries where the rectangular shape is definitely the best choice, allowing maximum movement of the legs and avoiding the effect “claustrophobic” of the Mummy.

Remember, also, that all sleeping bags on Bridgat, through the side zipper allow if you are travelling as a couple, or you go in a particularly cold, to pair them and sleep in 2.
Last aspect to be verified before the final decision is the size, so watch out not to neglect because you are tall!
